No sessions for developers or teaching development?
by Farhan Karmali - Friday, 16 May 2014, 12:58 AM

While the list of sessions is so wonderful and each topic is interesting I was wondering how come there are not many sessions for development , I see only one which I missed today morning

I was hoping to learn on how to use git, how to get our code approved for moodle main branch etc

Hi Farhan

Sure there is (are) sessions on development. My session touches on quiz GUI customisation with emphasis on Javascript, JQuery, CSS plus other goodies. Shameless plug. I'm a programmer by training (sort of), so code is what I kinda do in my free time ...although I must admit that most of what I did, I did through trial-and-error, and through the help of many helpful individuals who unselfishly gave their time and talents to share code with me on Moodle.org and Stackoverflow.com.  Well, anyway, hope to see you at my session. If you can make it, you are most welcome to drop by here (and also for others' presentations!).

Unfortunately, I don't cover Git since I'm not familiar with it. But if you love hacking code, then enjoy the (my) session.

Cheers
Frankie Kam (Malaysia)

I wrote a blog post that covers this:

http://tjhunt.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/fixing-bug-in-moodle-core-mechanics.html

Also Dan's presentation from last year is good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_siMVcA0_Q

We could try to hijack one of the un-conference sessions and have an information developer workshop. I'm not quite sure how that would work. Does anyone have any thoughts on how we could do that?

  1. OK, to make a more definite suggestion, I am prepared to have a go at fixing https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-44333 while screen-sharing, if we can find suitable time over the weekend. Perhaps in the empty Sat 17 May 19:00 (Europe/London) slot, immediately after the repeat of my Delivering online exams using Moodle presentation.

If I do this, I promise you it will be completely unscripted, and pretty random, but that looks like an easy bug to fix, so it should be a good one to use to talk people through the process.

(I reserve the right to regret making this offer.)

Also, I won't be offended if you don't want to go ahead with this.

Cool!

I would be interested in that, Tim, you can count me in.

I was telling a colleague about the first iMoot having developer, admin, and teacher streams and how helpful that was. Thanks for volunteering!

"thumbs up"

Tim,

Even though I'm not much of a hacker, I would love to see how it's all done.  I love to know the ins and outs of how things work. Please let us know if you do decide to do that.

Wendi has been in touch, and the session is now definitely going ahead on Sunday

Sun 18 May 14:30 (Europe/London) which is the same time as "Waleed's mystery session" if that helps you find it.

Awww, blubbering bubbles!

I won't be available at that time! Will be behind the drum set with my Praise Team in church leading worship. Would you please pretty please record this session for those of us who can't make it to still be able to learn from you?

Thank you so much!

Hi Sarah

All sessions are recorded automatically by default so pop into the Super Developer Session - Moodle development live: fixing MDL-44333 course when you're back online and click the middle image to watch the replay!

Thanks again Tim for offering to do this - I hear you earned a special badge for that, just because :)

Hi Farhan,

The session is just about to start: http://2014.imoot.org/course/view.php?id=85 - it's late entry.  The recording should be available to watch later.

Cheers,

Gareth

There is a good one on plugin development by Justin Hunt, I cleaned up the recording of that session and posted it in the forum for that session here:

http://2014.imoot.org/mod/forum/view.php?f=43

He covers getting your code approved... :-)
